To-day is Groundhog Day-- Folklore says, if the Groundhog sees his shadow on this day, he will retreat down his burrow, a sign that winter will go on for 6 more weeks--If he doesn't see his shadow, , it means, Spring will arrive early-- and, guess what?--- We have a cloudy day to-day--- Old Mr. Groundhog did not see his shadow, so, thank goodness, Spring will arrive early--- I hope!
What a crazy thing eh?--- As if we believe all that!--But, (always the big "butt")- this tradition was brought to America by German settlers. , so I read! It was adopted from a European Christian Holiday called, Candlenas Day, and this was celebrated on Feb, 2nd.
Christians had their candles blessed to bring protection to their homes for the rest off the winter . The candles were needed for the winter and represented how long and cold the winter would be . These early settlers selected a Hedgehog to represent this tradition.
In case anyone wondered, it said , this prediction is correct only 39% of the time only!
And it also is the beginning of the Chinese New Year!
Lord love a Duck! --For an ordinary winter day, it seems there is a lot going on!
Good Morning Lynda, Wiarton Willie says spring is on the way. WhooHoo Sam & Phil both said more winter for their areas. It rained here overnight and now it is snowing so we have black ice everywhere this morning, everything is cancelled, no school buses running etc. I see the weight is going down. Good to hear. You will reach that goal. Just give it time.
ReplyDeleteGood day, Lynda. Lovely story. Have a beautiful day.
ReplyDeleteGroundhog here saw his shadow, so . . . looks like 6 more weeks of the winter stuff. Ah well. Hope that he’s WRONG1
ReplyDeleteHUGS to you and thinking of you.

We will hope that the groundhog is right and spring is on the way. It will be nice to feel warm weather and see the sun. Enjoy your day.
ReplyDeleteIn Pennsylvania the sun was out. In Woodstock, IL it was not.
ReplyDelete6 more weeks of winter in PA, but not in IL!!! Smiles.
Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year.

Interesting information. I did not know some of it so it was nice to learn something new today. I do remember hearing about the candles being blessed.
ReplyDeleteHope spring does come early for you all. We have had a really nice winter lots of sun which has been so nice. I love the sun in the winter because it does not get that hot!!!
Have a great day
Happy Groundhog Day Lynda.
ReplyDelete6 more weeks of winter here...we're in the middle of a blizzard complete with ice. Everything closed and were told to stay home.
ReplyDeleteIts good to know ONLY 6 more weeks of winter.
Interesting story on groundhog day.
Hope all is well there. Were good and as long as the power stays on, we'll be just fine. I made soup and baked a turkey breast this morning.
Have a good day. Take good care of you.
Sleet, ice, deep freeze on the way here in Central Texas -- hunkering down for next few days. This is not expected to be anywhere as serious as last year.
ReplyDeleteHappy Chinese New Years.
ReplyDeleteI am so ready for Spring. This winter seems like it's been longer and colder than usual - although we've had very little snow which I suppose is a blessing! And we were told 6 more weeks - my guess is that we'll have more than than before we truly see Spring! But we'll hang on!!!
ReplyDeleteI never pay attention to the groundhogs around the world, so it bothers me not. It will be cold here until it is not, lol. Happy New Year, Lynda! Take care of yourself.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the origin of Groundhog Day Lynda!
ReplyDeleteFinally caught up on you posts. Hang in there, you are not alone! Hugs!
I grew up in the western part of New York State. My mother always said it didn't matter if the groundhog saw his shadow. That we were always going to have 6 more weeks of winter.
ReplyDeleteWinter is a major part of why I moved to South Carolina.
All i had to do was follow the link on your FB page!
ReplyDeleteOur ground predicte 6 more weeks of winter. We expect at least 8!
Now to read yesterday's blog...{{{HUGS}}}
Year of the Tiger, right? Awesome! Let us go forth and Roar!
ReplyDeleteLove traditions and where they came from thanks
ReplyDeleteI love that movie! I love Groundhog's Day, and February, the month of love! Well, some parts of February, anyway. It's my dating anniversary, today, actually, we set it to be, and then there's Valentine's Day, which for me means a very sumptious dinner out and flowers, because that's what I asked for, LOL, and also, the days will be longer and February is a short month. It will be warming up, as well. What's not to like? Other than around these parts (Central Ohio), we get more sleet, and freezing rain, come February. In fact, I get to stay home from work tomorrow, we are closed. We are due to get an ice storm with snow. Starting tonight. Maybe power will be out, as well. Hope not.
ReplyDeleteMost of the information you wrote about I did not know. Today is a good day as I learned something. Thank you

The history of Groundhog Day was interesting ... and all new to me. :D
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday!
When I heard that every other groundhog said 6 more weeks of winter but the Ontario groundhog said early spring. I guess that means Ontario will have an early spring and the rest of Canada will keep winter. That works for me. ;)
