The Bedroom above the kitchen----We never told Gramma!

All Moms are the best! -My Dad was  a great Dad too- but----Moms  are ABOVE the Queen!--  And, I do respect the Queen!--- A Mom is a title, just above "Queen".    Hmmmmmm!

Yesterday the computer guy came out here and resurrected the old DELL computer. Of course he wanted to know why I needed it when I prefer the I Mac.--I told him that it is up to me to  write about my family--for my kids. The pressure is on for me to do that, because, my older sister has passed on, my older brother can't remember too much and is a bit mixed up about it all, and my younger brother  only talks to me at Christmas time, and my adopted sister doesn't remember what I do----

Anyway, I told the computer guy that I want to put a slight slant on this Family History--  I mean, not just names, but a few stories to go with the people and places-- For instance, when my Mom and Dad travelled along Hwy #2, from London, Ontario, to Port Perry, to visit Grandfather and Grandmother, with all of us in the car--There were no fast food places, but there were rest stops---with a picnic table, and Dad always had his Coleman stove and would heat up Pork and Beans and weinors for lunch.

At Grammas, my sister and I always had to sleep in a double bed--together--- in a room above the kitchen, with a stove pipe running up to the roof  from the kitchen. We were warned not to touch this stove pipe--EVER! ----- and-sleeping together--in the same bed-- even tho it was a double bed, was   interesting, because we never stayed on one side-- Eventually a leg or an arm would go over to my sister's side and I would abruptly wake  up-----My sister , older than me, had devised a plan to keep me on my own side--I would hear, "Here comes the chopper!"--and she had her arm bent at her elbow, and would pound the bed from the top to the bottom, making sure all my limbs were out of way..

I never forgot "the chopper"---  I reminded my sister of that for years  after, and the 2 of us would laugh and laugh.

Little did Gramma ever know what the 2 of us had gone thru in the bedroom above the kitchen, and--for some reason, we knew, never to tell her about "the chopper"!

Gramma on the left--Grampa on the far rt--beside their house!

  1. What sweet memories you have! Love the photo! I think you're smart to write them down. I had (have?) a book with prompts to write thing but I think I used it to talk about my mother for my daughter... I'll have to look again to see if I have it. When my mom was living, I'd email her the question and print her answers for the book. Now to look again... Have a terrific day!

  2. I had a laugh about the “chopper” - it’s nice to hear about the past. Good idea to get all that info down while you can. There are questions I would like to ask my Mom but she has been gone for 3 years now and had Alzheimer’s for the last few years of her life. Have a good day Lynda and don’t work to hard. It’s still a heat warning here with a chance of thunderstorms today but we could use the rain. ⛈ 👍

  3. Oh, my, what memories! I swear I went on car trips like that... the one that comes to mind is the drive from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Urbana, Illinois to meet my great-grandfather's mother. Yes, that's right, my great-great grandmother, who had turned 100, cashed in her life insurance to pay for a nursing home! I was ten, and mega impressed with a woman who remembered the black border on the newspapers when President Lincoln was shot. Yes, she was four years old when Lincoln was shot. She remembered the odd family story about the folks who traveled EAST in a covered wagon... because they didn't make a go of it where they had originally moved.

Old stories have to be written down while we can still articulate them, don't they? And while we still remember who told them to us!

    Have a great Wednesday!

  4. What wonderful memories you have of a great childhood. I just have my older sister left now to ask questions when I can't remember things. Luckily her memory is still excellent and she can remember what I can't. Lately I think back to my life when I was growing up and it brings back so many happy thoughts. Thank you for sharing your memories. Have a happy Wednesday!

  8. Such a great idea . . . I should probably do the same although I am not sure my kids even care about the old stories.

  9. High heat index here, 106, plus Ozone, this part of Texas is how Los Angeles used to be back in the 1970’s, loaded with smog. But they fixed it, by changing the gasoline. They won’t do that here.
Yes, write down those memories as soon as you can. This generation might not care much, but the next one usually does! It is important.

  10. I remember those car rides. If we made it 6 miles down the highway without saying are we there yet, it would have been a minor miracle. LOL I took a class many years ago regarding writing family histories. I really enjoyed that. Everyone got an opportunity to share a story each week. The instructor and students got a chance to critique it making suggestions on how to make it better. It wasn't as bad as it sounds.

When we would get together as a family my younger sister would ask me to bring along my folder of stories and I would proceed to make my mother cringe! Of course they were always told from my child's eye view.

  11. I'm glad you are doing that. I started an album many years ago, but have not looked at it lately. I had mostly stories about my Dad as my Mom passed away before I became interested in the family history. At least I have some memories and pictures to pass along to others. Sharon Cyr

  12. What a lovely memory! Pork’n’beans and weiners! Stuff of childhood. Loved it . . . back then! When we traveled, we always had sandwiches, something to drink and all. Lovely memories.

OMG, that’s actually a sweet story about the chopper! LOL

Yes, have to definitely agree w/you . . . Moms are the best! Always.

  16. Laughed aloud at your Chopper story. My 3 sisters and I shared a bedroom with 2 double beds. My sister I shared a bed with was the Chopper -- two years younger than me. We had striped sheets and, no kidding, she counted the stripes from each side to mark the middle one. I was a heavy sleeper and she was not. With no forewarning I would be rudely awakened to her chopping away on whatever body part crossed the line.

  18. I REMEMBER THOSE DAYS, STOPPING ON THE SIDE OF THE RODE WITH A PICNIC LUNCH. WHEN WE WOULD GO TO MINNESOTA TO VISIT MY AUNT AND UNCLE MOM WOULD PACK THE CAR WITH BLANKETS AND PILLOWS AND WE WOULDN'T START OUT UNTIL MY FATHER CLOSED THE DRY CLEANERS FOR THE NIGHT AND THEN WE WOULD START OUT ON THE LONG JOURNEY. THERE WERE 4 OF US KIDS ONE ON THE FLOOR OF THE BACK SEAT, TWO ON THE BACK SEAT AND ONE IN THE BACK WINDOW. WE MUST OF SLEPT ALL THE WAY THERE BECAUSE THAT IS ALL THAT I REMEMBER. WE MUST HAVE BEEN JUST REALLY LITTLE OTHERWISE WE WOULD NOT HAVE FIT. LOVE YOUR MEMORIES LYNDA!

  21. Good Evening, Linda. Beth here. I enjoy family stories/memories. There are a few stories in my family that a quite interesting like my maternal Grandmother had royalty in her background. My sister has been doing some research and I plan to take it up before too long. I would like to fit the stories to the old pictures I now have in my possession. Your blog was a good reminder to get going on that project and I do have more time now that I am no longer working. Thank you for sharing the stories and the picture of your Grandparents.

  23. What a wonderful memory of you sister. It is good to write down all this history. I started doing that for my son as he is an only child and I just never followed through. Think it's time I revived that and got started on that once again.
