Older Women need -WEIGHT TRAINING__

Can you tell that I am disappointed---not much help- coming this way---at the moment-- I guess it all began yesterday-- with the weather--  the big meltdown, in the North--which means, our driveway, turned from layers of snow---to ice--thick ice --- One could skate on it---  It happens every year--

I put big Beau out to do his business a couple times yesterday--and he runs on the icey drive--out near the gate at the road, to find , his "PO" fields---and I saw, his legs  going all over the place-- I knew this was going to be a problem, not only for him, but for me-- I put a message on a sons phone--asking him to let me know of someone who could spread some sand on the drive-The day passed--and I never heard from anyone---So, of  course, I put big Beau out this AM., and he went running out , on the icey drive--and down he went-onto his side---I went out to help the poor dog, and down I went---So, there we were--Beau and I lying on the ice--on our driveway--

I came inside --with big Beau----  We were both Ok- It is Sunday however--No sander will ever appear here --(on a Sunday)-Yesterday I had bought 4 , 50 pound bags of sand, so----and somehow I had to get some sand on the ice----- Have you ever lifted a 50 pound bag of sand?-- Lord love a Duck---I managed to lift 2 of them, into a spreader, which would not "spread", but I could toss it out manually from the spreader--and it worked, until I tried to lift bag #3--and I must've torn some thing in my left arm--- The pain goes up to my neck--

Long story short-- The bags are tossed around the icey drive--I did it---  doesn't cover it very well--but at least I can walk out there sorta safely--

Woman must be strong--  and it seems , the older the woman. the stronger one must be----  There is no good fairy waiting around to give one a hand--no time for tears---maybe a bit of weight training is a good idea--- To-day, this is life----not the way I ever thought it would be--but--the way it is--

A few weights in my day will for sure help me toss bags of salt onto the drive----- maybe  not going to a gym-- just lift the weights in my living room --a few repetitions -----
I hope your day is going well--
GET UP---  GET AT_ER---  WE CAN!

  1. Oh dear! You should probably see a doctor about your arm, sounds very painful.
I am going to play devil’s advocate here and suggest that maybe next time you wait a bit longer and see if your son is just delayed in his response to you. Do you really need to have the driveway clear every single day? Is it worth breaking a hip or damaging an arm over? And next time, maybe you could open the large bags where they are and then use a coffee can or something to transfer the contents to where you want it. I am not criticizing, but you are not as young as you feel, and maybe you need to rethink how you do things so that you don’t hurt yourself. I know, I sound like your kids, but I have been reading your blog since the old days, and I worry about you and I would say the same thing to my friends here at home,
Take care of yourself(you tell us that all the time) and give that arm and shoulder a rest!

  2. Hi Lynda, oh dear, I'm so sorry you fell. I'm happy you're OK. I'm sorry one of the boys didn't come to spread sand. Loved the insert about the gym, lol, but that was 4 hrs ago when I was younger. Had to laugh. Glad you maintain your humor. Also, I am woman and I am tired. True. I can relate to those darn heavy bags. I have to drag 40 lb bags of salt for water softener down the stairs....once I get them out of the car. So far, I'm managing it but afraid of falling. It's also hard to open it and hold it to pour in the tank. Grrrrr. We do what we gotta do.
I'm so sorry about the ice. It's dreadful and so dangerous.
It's sunny and Spring in St.Louis...69F at the moment.
No choice but for you to stay in. Hoping Fred has settled down and you can relax and do nothing. If one of the boys does come...you've already handled it as best you could. Gets disappointing. I understand. I'm in the same boat but son is an hour away and doesn't seem to even think of us. Is what it is.
Hang in, stay strong. Try to RELAX and enjoy today.
    Hugs and blessings
    Extra hugs

  3. Oh no! You and Beau both fell! I am glad you are both OK, but then you hurt your arm carrying 50lb bags of sand! So sorry to hear this - but I know exactly where you are coming from.....it is so discouraging to ask for help in the first place - and then when it doesn't happen, you decide to "Just do it" yourself. I have experienced similar things living here alone. Like the time I fell off the ladder in the driveway trying to powerwash mildew off of the white gutters....I hurt my elbow, but mostly my pride. Went out and bought an extender rod for the power washer so I won't need the ladder in the future. Maybe you could put sand in something like your spreader when snowy, icy weather is approaching and keep it next to your outside door? Scoop the sand from the bag instead of lifting it? I know your frustration level! Hang in there! I hope that today is a much better day for you my friend!

  4. Oh, Lynda...that must've been really scary and hard for both of you on that ice. Beau may have some bruising on his side. And you! Do you remember (I'm sure you do as you are a nurse) ice for swelling, heat for pain? Try not to do too much today. You don't want to injure yourself further.
I have dumb bells...little 2 # ones for use in my hands to exercise my arms and shoulders. I also have a 5 # on I hold in both hands and bring over my head and down my spine. That's for the triceps. I also use that one by hanging onto it with 2 hands while sitting. Then I stand up with it held in front of me. Wow! Does that ever help the front of my thighs and whatever. It helps me be able to stand from a sitting position easier...like a regular chair or toilet.
I am kind of surprised that one of your local sons didn't come to help. Well, I guess they have their own stuff to do, too...families, jobs, chores.
This is the beginning of a new week. Let's make it lots better for everyone we care for...especially ourselves.
    Had a great time at karaoke. Wish you were there. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. I have large containers of salt to spread on ice and am honestly pretty strong. BUT I would not attempt to life a 50 lb. bag of sand. I open my big bag of salt and have a container I use to load up a pail that I can manage and use that to spread. I am glad that you don’t feel like you hurt yourself, but. . . I wonder if that arm pain is a rotator cuff tear. THAT IS PAINFUL!

So sorry that both you and Beau fell. Hope that the situation eases up a little. And sorry you local sons couldn’t help you. *SIGH*

I think it’s that way all over. My DS rarely calls, but he does text, so at least he does stay in touch. BUT helping out w/a chore or 2 never occurs to him. Both he and DD are about 30 min. away so it’s a bit of a hike but WE’VE made the hike to help them!

JUST take care of yourself. I DO hope you have your arm checked out.

    Hugs and healing!

  7. It's Marti - don't you have some ice cleats? that you strap on your shoes? You REALLY need ice cleats where you live. I even have them for when I walk the dog 3 times around here in winter, because I fell once. They are called Yaktrax. Google them and buy some! You can walk on the slickest of ice with those on.

    1. I maybe do not have the right kind of cleats--but I do have cleats on my boots--This ice is like the ice at an arena--- no places without ice---is bad--supposed to rain to-morrow--Tht might melt it somewhat-Lynda

  8. It's Kathy. I agree with Marti above. You should get yourself a pair of ice cleats. They slip over the bottom of your shoes. It's not perfect but it would give you some security going out on the icy driveway. We have had so little snow but when the ice melts off our roof it pools on the driveway too. I won't go out there at all. I'm so sorry you and big Beau slipped and fell - so dangerous for you. It's a shame that not one of your sons or grandsons, or granddaughters for that matter, couldn't come and help you yesterday. I'm glad you didn't hurt yourselves. It's quiet at my house right now. The 2 dogs are sleeping, Daisy right by me, Annie on her blanket in the living room. The noisy people are with my ex's family. Tom and I were invited but it seems like a better idea to stay home and enjoy the sounds of silence!!! They will be back for one more overnight and it's going to be an early morning tomorrow. Maybe I'll be ready for a nap tomorrow afternoon! Hope the rest of your day is good!

  9. Hi Lynda: I can't lift 10 lbs never mind 50 lbs. And I'm a bit younger than you! I hope both you and Beau are ok. I can't bend down to use those cleats but if you can you should use them. It's disgusting the one of your sons or grandkids didn't come to help. They need to remember your age although since you don't and they see you doing everything! I hope your arm is ok and that you can take himself to daycare tomorrow. Look after yourself - thank goodness winter is almost over! Hugs Brenda
