A really terrible awful part of computers--

I turned on the computer , last night, as I always do, to check your responses to "the blog"--- This was just before I went to bed--  In my email, was a terrible , terrible  email--The jest of the thing, was whoever sent it, wanted a ransom--Bitcoins--sent--I wanted to vomit!

There were a lot of things written were odd--#1. The email was an old email--which was forwarded to my present email----------------#2. The email said they had access to my computer--and if I didn't do as they said, they would send pictures of me watching Porn--

I am almost 80 yrs old--- I DO NOT DO THAT---

So, I checked the scam lists-- and there it was--everything this email stated was written as a scam--I also called my guy who works on computers--He asked me , "Did yu respond?"--"NO", I replied--

Of course I deleted the email---  but---  I was sickened--- I wanted to turn off the computer and never turn it on again--I wanted to shut myself in my room and never look at people in case I see this  crazy person who does things like this--

I DELETED THE TERRIBLE  AWFUL EMAIL---I also reported it to  the web site it told me to, as well as to Son#3, the policeman----

I will not add any more people to my FACEBOOK PAGE--at least for now--and if anyone wants to be a friend, they will have to send me why they want to be on my Facebook--

AS yu can tell, I am sickened with all this horrible crap--Who does things like this?--

The good thing is, things this person said in the email were not true--so, it sounded pretty suspicious-- Have any of you survived stuff like this, and how did you handle it?--

I don't even want to say, "Lord love a Duck"--I am just so sickened---

  1. As a person who used to work programming computers, I have become very thick skinned about e-mails that look/sound threatening or alarming... be suspicious, do NOT respond, and certainly don't click on any of their links. Straight in the trash, and don't lose sleep.

Part of the reason I deleted my Instagram account was stuff of this sort. I get suspicious "friend" requests on FB... especially look out for requests that look like they are from someone you are ALREADY FRIENDS with. These are hackers, for sure!

It's kind of like the old "don't talk to strangers" advice we got as children. But it's not worth losing sleep over or feeling sickened. It's crooks.

  2. I've had a few of those Emails and of course I know none of it is true. I bin them and move on. I also receive the occasional scam call that's obviously a computerised voice telling me either the bank is holding my account closed or the tax office something something... I have always hung up on those. They are obviously scams. And now they come in from other countries so those I just don't answer the phone to. I got three the other day when I was expecting a legit txt message from the health dept letting me know my Covid test results. THAT finally came in and was NEGATIVE! I was so relieved!

My advice (I've been online since before the Internet!) is to delete those Emails as soon as you see it's probably a scam and move on with your day. Don't let it ruin your day.

In other news. It's been MUGGY here in Adelaide for the last week. It's normally dry and I've come to like it that way. But this week it's been like August in Michigan. And here I am, you with your low temperatures, complaining. Sorry! It's warm here. Come visit! ((Hugs))

  3. You've gotten sound advice. There are SOOooooo many scammers out there. If I do not know an e-mail address or a phone #, I delete the e-mail and don't answer unknown phone #'s.

Prior to the pandemic, DH and I were involved in a community awareness program for Seniors to avoid being scammed. It is amazing how 'creative' these criminals can be.

Glad you didn't respond, glad you reported it.

HUGS and hope today is a better day.

  4. Air Hugs for you. . . I am so sick of those people out there trying to take advantage of others. We always have to have our guard up. Good going recognizing that it was a scam. I throw away anything I don't recognize or if it has no subject in the title . . . then I go to the trash file and throw out the trash. . . so far so good but awhiles mindful. You are wise and I wish you a better day.

  5. Lynda, you did the exact right thing but don't loose sleep over it.
I got an instant message from you, which I thought was odd, and when I replied to how are you....this person wanted me to SEND MONEY. I replied this isn't Lynda and blocked whoever. Always bad guys out there. Stay alert. I get gobs of friend requests....dont know them....delete.
Have a good day. Stay well and warm.
    Hugs from Missouri.

  6. Don't lose sleep over it Lynda. It has become a common occurence these days. Surprised you've never had it before. Between computer & telephone we get at least 5 a day. Computer...just delete. Telephone...if you don't know the caller's number, don't answer.

  7. Please do not worry any more, just practice safe on-line communication. I was taken in by a scam via telephone call / computer. Never again.

  8. That's terrible, I'm so sorry that happened to you. I am getting so much spam in my email too, just delete them as they come

  9. Don't worry - it's nothing personal. The same email was probably sent to 100's 0f others. Never do anything with them other than delete and never ever click on anything in them. The same with the phone for any calls threatening jail, etc. They use things like Canada Revenue ID info to look official. Always look at the actual address email is sending from and ignore any phone calls that try to sound official. Lots of calls actually originate from overseas. Don't worry about it being about you personally - it's always to get money. Glad you're being careful and don't let it ruin your day. Take care. Go for a walk!

  10. When I sign on each day, I usually delete 75% of the e-mail received without looking at it. Pretty much the same with my phone texts and voicemails. If a # is not on my phone Contact List OR I've requested something specific outside of Contact List, it's block/delete -- an annoying inconvenience for the times we currently live it.

  11. We have this happen often Lynda. Don't open, delete. I get a lot telling me my amazon a/c is locked until I answer them...I turn them in to Amazon and spam them.
Anyone who knows you....would know you are not into that kind of stuff. Delete button is your friend.
This is why when I see some strange dude wanting you to send him a friend request, I mark Them SPAM on your page....then I go to their page and block them.
A lot of crazies out there, one they want money & 2, they want attention. David gets them also.

  12. So much good advice. You did the right thing. You have some very good friends on here. I hope I am included in that group. I have enjoyed your blogs ever since I read the first one I read on Spark People. I am so glad you were able to start a blog outside of SP because I really do enjoy them. (except this one because this ordeal was upsetting to you.)
I hope the rest of your day is better and tomorrow better than today.

    1. I forgot to mention what DOES get me: a Facebook message from a "friend" or a previous "friend" who is obviously not them. Or, you can't tell. I have been in conversation with one such acquaintance from college days who said "been awhile since we've chatted" or something and I just cannot tell if it's truly HER or someone has hacked into her Facebook. I don't know her well enough these days to tell. And one from a former Facebook friend that was friendly enough, but I could tell wasn't from her. I asked her a personal question to try to ferret out the truth, but they never answered, so I just blocked her from Facebook. No loss, as we weren't really friends anymore. BUT...these very subtle hacks on Facebook make one afraid to trust. I don't like that, because I'm a very trusting person.

  15. There are so many scams out there now. I don't understand how someone can try and take advantage of people, especially seniors. You did the right thing and now just be careful and try and enjoy today. (((HUGS)))

  16. I'm so sorry this happened to you. As rule of thumb, I do not open any email that comes from somebody I don't know. I just send them to trash and block them. ((hugs))

  17. Lynda, you did the right thing by deleting all that junk! It comes from computers that send out the same thing to hundreds, not one single person. Just like those stupid phone calls. There should be a way for the companies to get rid of them before we even get them. If they wanted to do that. Darn it all. Wishing you a better night.

  19. I'm sorry this upset you so much Lynda. When I see anything like that I delete it and move on. There's a lot of nasty people in the world. People like you still give me hope.
